Organizational History
The Stark County Historical Society, dba the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, was formed in 1946. It is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a 22-member elected board of trustees. Our mission is to collect and preserve the history of Stark County with a special focus on the presidential history of William McKinley. We serve as an educational center for history and science, offering interpretive exhibitions and educational programs for the local community and an expanding global audience.

The Museum receives no government funding for daily operations. The Museum also owns and cares for the McKinley National Memorial, where the 25th president of the United States William McKinley, First Lady Ida McKinley and their two young daughters are entombed. Our holdings include the largest collection of McKinley memorabilia in the world. The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum is funded with admissions, memberships, grants, programs, interest on investments and donations. We annually host approximately 200,000 visitors to the grounds and 50,000 guests to the Museum, including 15,000 children each year on school field trips.

The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum is an ideal destination for families, because we have something for everyone.  Our facility includes the McKinley Gallery, featuring the largest collection of McKinley memorabilia in the world; the Street of Shops, a life-sized indoor 19th century town; the Stark County Story, a permanent exhibition exploring 200 years of local history; Discover World, an interactive science center; and the 65-seat Hoover-Price Planetarium.  We are also the home of the Ramsayer Research Library, a non-lending facility for research, and a changing exhibition space called the Keller Gallery, which features rotating traveling exhibitions and shows produced in-house featuring our permanent collection of artifacts.  There is a large HO gauge train layout in the Street of Shops which is very popular with kids and adult train enthusiasts.  Discover World is the home to many live animals, ranging from turtles and snakes to bearded dragons and a rabbit.

We host several special events throughout the year, including McKinley Day, a celebration of the President’s birthday in January; a Halloween Party; and a Holiday Open House.  We also have a popular lecture series – Soup at Six – which feature historical topics from speakers on staff and occasionally outside guests.
