Cemeteries have a special language, spoken through the symbols carved on tombstones. Using photographs from cemeteries across the country, this program demystifies the symbolism and explains the origins of the “rural cemetery movement” in the mid-19th century. Executive Director Kim Kenney has a passion for cemeteries, and was recently awarded the Oakley Certificate of Merit from the Association of Gravestone Studies for her interpretive projects at West Lawn Cemetery. This illustrated lecture is part of Kim’s on-going cemetery research project. She recently presented this program for the Cemetery and Mortuary Association of California in Palm Springs, CA. This illustrated lecture is part of Kim’s on-going cemetery research project. The fee for this program is $50.
