2024 Soup at Six

Our 2024 “Soup at Six” program’s  features a diverse range of historical and cultural topics. Each program begins at 6:00PM and includes soup, bread, and dessert for $25. Prepaid registration is required. See each description for link to purchase and for the deadline date.

Steamy Women

Join us as Discover World Associate Ashlea Zantene explores the roles and impact of women on the early American Railroad when the Iron Horse ruled the world of transportation.

We will explore the dawn of steam locomotives from the perspective of women, their impact on the railroad industry during both World Wars, and stories from women across the country influenced by the railroad as we explore this bygone era.

About Ashlea:

Ashlea Zantene graduated from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with her bachelor’s in Anthropology, with a focus on archaeology and Middle Eastern studies. She and her family relocated to Dover, Ohio from Pennsylvania almost 11 years ago where they have been raising their family ever
since. Ashlea started her museum career at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek, Ohio as Lead Site Interpreter, before taking her current position as a Discover World Science Assistant with the William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum in April 2023.

McKinley's New Creases

Presented in collaboration with the Massillon Museum, this program will explore the social, cultural, and political attitudes towards the adoption of the men’s trousers crease in the late 19th century. 

In particular, Brian Centrone will discuss how President McKinley’s adoption of the style shifted fashion allegiance from the Prince of Wales to the US President, signaling the rise of America as the new global super power.

About Brian:

Brian Centrone is an author, curator, and scholar specializing in the intersection of fashion and culture, particularly in late nineteenth and twentieth-century American menswear and popular culture. He is the guest curator for Gilding Northeast Ohio: Fashion and Fortune: 1870-1900 at the Massillon Museum, Ohio (2024), and has also co-curated the exhibition Gray Area: Authenticity, Value, and Subversion in Fashion at 80 WSE Gallery, New York (2018) and guest curated the exhibition The Cunning Wrinkle of Newness: 19th Century Origins, Implications, and Adoptions of the Trouser Crease at the Harold L. Drimmer Library in Valhalla, New York (2022). 

Protecting the Past

Protecting cultural treasures during wartime is complicated.  The rules of engagement often prohibit the military from responding to threats in close proximity to historic cultural sites.

Learn more about the bravery of curators, the destruction of antiquities, and the importance of historical memory in this brand new program presented by Executive Director Kim Kenney and 20-year Air Force veteran Karen Everman.

About Karen:

Major Karen Everman retired in 2020 after serving 20 years in the United States Air Force.  Early in her career she trained as a B-1 Bomber Defensive Avionics. She commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 2002 and completed Air Battle Manager (ABM) training to fly on the Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) aircraft.

During her career, Karen flew over 250 missions and 2000 hours in four different crew positions, including 149 combat missions and 1500 combat hours in 15 years.  She deployed to the Middle East eight times between 2007 and 2018, including one 365-day deployment to the 609th Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) in Al-Udeid Air Base.

Kim Kenney Curator of the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum in October 2001 and was promoted to Executive Director in 2019.

She is the author of nine books, including Stark County Food:  From Early Farming to Modern Meals (with co-author Barb Abbott of Canton Food Tours) and Murder in Stark County.  Her ninth book, Exploring the American Presidency through 50 Historic Treasures, was published in 2022.  Kim has appeared on The Daily Show, First Ladies: Influence & Images, and Mysteries at the Museum.  Her program “The 1918 Influenza Pandemic” was featured on C-SPAN’s series American History TV. 

Secret Societies

Join Science Director Lynette Reiner as she examines Ancient Secret Societies such as the Illuminati, Freemasons, Knights Templar, and more.

These societies were the incubators of democracy, modern science, and ecumenical religion. They elected their own leaders and drew up constitutions to govern their operations. Still today, archaeologists continue to learn more about the functionality of these societies.

About Lynette:

Lynette Reiner graduated from the University of Akron with a double major of Comprehensive Social Studies and Interdisciplinary Anthropology.  She received her master’s degree in Zoology from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio. She was an intern at the Summit County Historical Society, in Akron, where she worked on preservation and archiving artifacts. She interned at the Jewish Community Center in Akron, teaching history and religion. She was an active volunteer at the Akron Zoo in animal interpretation and care. She participated at the Fort Laurens Flux Gate dig, with the Ohio Historical Society. She worked in the field of science at Inventure Place, in Akron. Before becoming Science Director, she was Discover World Manager at the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum.

Christmas in the White House

Join Director of Education Ally Carlson for an illustrated program that looks at how some of our past Presidents have celebrated Christmas in and around the White House. A must see for the holiday season!

About Ally:

Allyson Carlson graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2011 with her bachelor’s in Middle Childhood Education, and completed her Master’s of Library and Information Science concentrating in Museum Studies from Kent State University in 2017. After spending a few years in the classroom, Ally got a part time job as a history docent at the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum in 2015. In 2019, Ally took over the Museum’s membership program in addition to her Education Department duties, and in 2020 she became the Director of Education and Membership.

Lawyer, Governor, Friend...

Join Archivist, Mark Holland, as he illustrates with sight and sound a part of William McKinley’s life in Canton before he places himself on the national scene as President of the United States.

You will be transported back to Canton, Ohio in the 1890’s. You will experience more about William McKinley, his wife, Ida Saxton McKinley, and their life in Canton, Ohio. Canton became a refuge from the hustle and bustle of Columbus, Ohio. See how William McKinley became the thirty-ninth governor of the state of Ohio.

About Mark:

Mark Holland is an optimist.  Mark grew up in North Canton and graduated from Hoover High School.  As the Archivist of the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum Mark inspires people to question everything and works alongside a team of 23 volunteers in the Ramsayer Research Library to find the answers to these questions.  Learning, teaching, volunteering, and helping people reach their full potential are ideals that drive Mark. 

Women at Work

Executive Director Kim Kenney will present this brand-new program to celebrate Women’s History Month! 

Over the past 200 years, women have worked in a variety of professions, ranging from engraving pocket watches at Dueber-Hampden to building components for the war effort in our community’s factories in the 1940s — and everything in between!  This program will explore the jobs and careers that women have held, including profiles of pioneering women in our community.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum is located at 800 McKinley Monument Dr NW in Canton. The Keller Gallery is the Museum’s temporary exhibition space and features a variety of topics each year. The Museum also includes the McKinley National Memorial, McKinley Gallery, Street of Shops, The Stark County Story, Discover World, Ramsayer Research Library, and the Hoover-Price Planetarium. The Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Museum is closed Sunday and Monday.
